Since its inception in 1994, W.O.M.E.N. has provided support, advice/referral, education, and nutrition information for people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
W.O.M.E.N.'s Board of Directors, staff and volunteers believe that HIV/AIDS is a community problem; therefore it requires a community response. W.O.M.E.N. is a non-profit organization that provides HIV outreach, education and prevention services as well as referrals for individuals and families infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. We are committed to improving the quality of life for people who are HIV positive while working to reduce rates of infection and risk to others. Preventing HIV and STI's requires a comprehensive strategy composed of a service delivery system with effective sustained health education and health promotion interventions.
W.O.M.E.N.'s health education and risk reduction programs are targeted to reach persons at increased risk of becoming infected with HIV or, if already infected, of transmitting the virus to others. W.O.M.E.N.'s outreach activities are peer led.
Community partnerships and linkages to the target population are deeply rooted in the culture of the leadership of the Board of Directors and staff. We strive to ensure that staff are members of the population and have received training in gender, age and cultural competence. The agency is well known in the community by its acronym W.O.M.E.N.
